My theme is, “The Bible’s enemies prove it’s true!” The Bible has long had enemies. We find examples of this in the Bible itself. For example, in the 36th chapter of what we call the Book of Jeremiah, we read that King Jehoiakim did not like what the prophet Jeremiah had written, so he through the writings in a fireplace. And we find examples of this in the years since the Bible was written many centuries ago. The former Soviet union was known for its active opposition to the Bible, as recorded in Brother Andrew’s book called “God’s Smuggler.” Many countries still oppose the Bible.
One thing many enemies of the Bible have had and do have in common is their attempts to discredit the truthfulness of the Bible. Their objection to the Bible leads them to deny its historical accuracy and its teachings.
Sometimes the most vocal opposition to the Bible comes from those who formerly claimed to believe it is the Word of God. Maybe most of the time this opposition comes from those who have never claimed to believe it.
But what is very interesting is that opposition to the Bible actually proves it’s God’s Word! “How so?,” you might ask. Well, the answer is very simple: Way back in the first century A. D., that is, in the days when the apostles of Jesus Christ were carrying out what he had called them to do, they predicted that their teaching, found in what we now call the New Testament portion of the Bible, would have enemies who would stand in opposition to it. And their predictions have come to pass! Therefore, the Bible’s enemies have really done the opposite of what they had intended to do. They had intended to discredit the Bible, but have unwittingly proved it’s true!
The apostle Paul predicted opposition to Biblical teaching. One example of his prediction of opposition to the Bible’s teachings is found in the fourth chapter of his letter to his preacher friend, Timothy. The first five verses of that chapter are given below. Here is what he wrote to Timothy: “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” These predictions have been fulfilled by opponents of the Bible. Their opposition proves the Bible’s truthfulness!
The apostle Paul gave such warnings elsewhere, too. Here is what he wrote in verses 1 – 5 of chapter 4 of his first letter to preacher Timothy: “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” These predictions have been fulfilled by opponents of the Bible. Their opposition proves the Bible’s truthfulness!
Paul was not the only apostle to predict opposition to Biblical truth. The apostle Peter also predicted it. Here is what he wrote in verses 1 – 3 of the second chapter of his second letter: “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.” These predictions have been fulfilled by opponents of the Bible. Their opposition proves the Bible’s truthfulness!
Yes, the Bible is a believable Book! It is God’s Word! It is absolute truth! It needs to be read and re-read, and read again and again. And as we read it, we will find that the Lord Jesus Christ is its central figure. The Bible points us to Jesus, who came into the world to save sinners. That means, he came into the world to save us, for we all are sinners in need of salvation. If you are not a Christian, I challenge you to do 3 things: 1) Read the Gospel of John carefully, and note its emphasis on Jesus Christ starting right in the first chapter. 2) Then read the rest of the New Testament. 3) Click on the following link, read the important message it gives, and do what it says.
