By Pastor Bruce K. Oyen and A. W. Tozer
The picture above is of A. W. Tozer. He was a pastor and author affiliated with the Christian And Missionary Alliance. He was born in 1897, and, like President John F. Kennedy and C. S. Lewis, died in 1963. The following prayer by Tozer is from chapter 14 of his very famous, must-read book called “The Knowledge Of The Holy.” This short but excellent book presents what the Bible says about many attributes of God, and how they relate to daily Christian life. Each chapter opens with one his prayers about the subject of that chapter, which in this case is the omnipresence of God.
For those of you who might not know the Bible very well, in this prayer, as well as in many other of his prayers, Tozer made reference to Biblical statements without giving chapter and verse for them. His mind was so saturated with the Bible that it was a part of his vocabulary. If he had given chapter and verse when the Bible was quoted and alluded to, his prayers would not have the vitality they do. Instead, they would have been too formal for their purpose.
Tozer’s Prayer About God’s Omnipresence
“Our Father, we know that Thou art present with us, but our knowledge is but a figure and shadow of truth and has little of the spiritual savor and inward sweetness such knowledge should afford. This is for us a great loss and the cause of much weakness of heart. Help us to make at once such amendment of life as is necessary before we can experience the true meaning of the words ‘In Thy presence is fulness of joy.’ Amen.”
