In this post, two questions will be answered: Why should we attend church services? And what kind of church should we attend. It is not my intention to write a long post about these subjects. Therefore, some points will not be covered, and the ones that are will not be covered in a lengthy manner. But it is hoped that what is written will be helpful to my readers. Now, let me ask and answer the questions.
Why should Christians attend church services? There are good reasons to do so. Consider some of them: 1) Their Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, attended synagogue services, and though we do not attend the synagogue, we should follow his example by attending church services. 2) We need the friendship and fellowship of other Christians, and church attendance is a primary means of having this friendship and fellowship. 3) We need to worship God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit with a group of believers. We can and should worship in private, but also with a congregation of Christians. The triune God deserves to have us gather together and sing songs of worship, praise, and thanksgiving to him. The Bible has many examples of corporate worship, and we should do likewise. A by-product of corporate worship is that it lifts our spirits and draws us closer to God. 4) We need to pray together with other believers. We can do this without meeting in a church building. But this can be a vital part of our church services, during which prayer requests for ourselves and others can be shared and prayed about right then. As we pray for others, God blesses them. As others pray for us, we are blessed. Christians often have struggles and problems with which to cope, and praying together helps them deal with these matters. 5) Christians should attend church services because they need to hear the Bible, God’s infallible Word, preached, taught, and applied to daily life. They also need to learn the great doctrines of the Bible from the sermons and Bible classes. This exposure to the Bible’s truths helps us stay on the path of discipleship, from which it is very easy for us to stray. 6) Our regular church attendance will help us be a good example to others concerning the importance of church attendance. This true for all Christians. But it is especially important for Christian parents to set an example to their children by regularly attending church services with them. This teaches children the importance of church attendance. And it also gives the children the opportunity to be exposed to Biblical truth. 7) Last but not least, Christians should attend church services because the Bible says we should do so. Here is what we read in Hebrews 10:24 & 25: “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
What kind of church should Christians attend? It should be a church which has at least these characteristics: 1) It believes the Bible to be the infallible Word of God. 2) It stands for, preaches, and teaches the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. 3) Its preachers and teachers tell those in attendance that they need to be saved if they are not saved, they tell them how to be saved, and give them opportunity to be saved right then. 4) It is a church in which the importance of living dedicated Christian lives and separation from sin are emphasized. 5) It should be a church which teaches that individuals are to be baptized (immersed) after they become Christians, and it is to be done as a public profession of their faith in Jesus Christ. 6) it should be a church which challenges its attendees to reach out to non-Christians with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and which supports home and foreign missionaries with prayer and money. 7) It should be a church which teaches the moral absolutes of the Bible. 8) It should be a church which believes and teaches Bible prophecy, such as is found in the apostle Paul’s two letters to the Thessalonian Christians. More could be said, but it is hoped that these points about what kind of church Christians should attend will be food for thought. it is hoped you attend this kind of church.
I have a question for you: If you fell over dead right now, would your soul go to heaven or to hell? Those are the only two options given in the Bible, and death ends all further opportunity to be saved. If you want to learn how you can be saved at once, click on the following link, read the brief article, and do what it says to do to go to heaven.
